Sonimorphic Contract Podcast Editor

Since the winter of 2023, I’ve worked as a contract podcast editor for Sonimorphic: a podcast production company that specializes in podcasting for ministries.

I got to edit this episode (“Who Is Molly’s Mom”, Episode 453) of “The Official Adventures in Odyssey Podcast”. As with all of the podcasts I edit for Sonimorphic’s clients, I used ProTools Studio and Izotope’s RX Suite, as well as a few other plugins (from Acon Digital and Waves). My role included all of the editing from start to finish, including initial processing and noise reduction on vocal tracks. This was a fun podcast to edit, because I learned a higher level of attention to detail in editing than I was used to previously.

The “Made for People Podcast with Justin Whitmel Earley” is a limited series podcast that I got to work on. There were a couple hurdles to overcome with this series, the main one being heavy dialogue cleanup and enhancement for the first few episodes of the series.

This episode from the second half of the series was one that didn’t require any dialogue enhancement. I was given the audio to process (noise reduction, volume levels), edit for filler words/retakes/distracting sounds as much as possible, and assemble with the show assets (music, intro, outro) to be delivered to my boss for the client.

“Ministries That Podcast” is Tim Hull’s podcast (my boss, and the owner of Sonimorphic), and one that I regularly edit episodes for. This episode with Garritt Hampton was edited first using Izotope RX for noise reduction and processing, and then with Descript where I removed filler words and exported an AAF file of the timeline to ProTools to finish the edit. I’ve been using this workflow recently to speed up the process; Descript allows me to use text-based editing and automatic filler word detection for initial edits that speed up the process of editing an episode significantly.

Along with audio-only podcasts, I’ve recently started editing video podcasts as part of my job working for Sonimorphic. I’ve gotten the opportunity to edit a few “Teacher Edition Podcast” episodes for BJU Press, as well as a new podcast by the Provisions Group called “My Biggest Marketing Mistake”. For these podcasts, I use Izotope RX for audio processing, and then I use Adobe Premiere Pro to edit the podcast. For some of the podcasts, I’ve also gotten to make clips for social media using Descript.

I got to edit the first three episodes of the “My Biggest Marketing Mistake” which was a great experience to learn what it looks like to work with a client on a brand new podcast. This was helpful, because many of the podcasts I work on have been running for awhile and have a sort of precedent or reference with which to help me during the edit. However, since this was a new video podcast, it was insightful to be able to work back and forth with Tim and the client to find the best design fit for elements like the show assets (lower-third graphics, intro/outro) in order to meet the client’s needs.

“Mary, Did You Know?”

This is an original cover of Mark Lowry’s “Mary, Did You Know?” that I arranged, recorded, and produced for a music production class. I recorded some of my friends singing and playing parts that I arranged for them, including vocals, trumpet, acoustic guitar, cajon and shaker. I also used some of the midi instruments and sounds native to Logic Pro, as well as a custom synthesizer sound. During the course of the semester that I took this class, I became quite familiar with using Logic Pro for recording and mixing music.
